A small French ladies Louis XV transitional period fruitwood, marquetry and parquetry inlaid, ormolu mounted escritoire dating from c 1770. The thick hand cut marble top supported on a concave shaped top moulding above a violin shaped fruitwood frame with chamfered edges and ormolu mounts. The fall front with fruitwood surround with elaborate lattice work fruitwood and tulip wood parquetry inlay and central oval floral marquetry panel above three conforming drawers with ormolu handles and escutcheons. The fruitwood sides with parquetry inlaid border, the whole resting on shaped cabriole legs with ormolu mounts and scrolled ormolu capped feet. The secretaire interior lined in walnut with four solid walnut drawers with brass button handles, the writing surface with leather skiver.
Good condition, outstanding mellow colour. Ormolu mounts, handles and escutcheons all original, original locks with a replacement key to the secretaire lock which turns the lock. Various old repairs mainly to the secretaire hinge area which is prone to pressure. There is evidence that a support stay to the secretaire drawer was once fitted but has been removed. This would have been a later addition, the sercretaire drawer being supported at the base of the drawer. This is a notorious weak area and this piece would benefit from this additional support to be refitted. SOLD
