A large Danish/South German Walnut Commode Altona dating from c 1750 of shaped Arc en Arbalette form and with parcel gilt decorative highlights. The shaped cross banded top with gilded moulded edge above four long shaped, cross banded drawers, edged with gilt and with ormolu handles and escutcheons separated by grooved gilt dividers. The sides cross banded, the whole standing on a shaped apron supported on shaped and grooved cabriole legs with gilt acanthus decoration. Superb colour and patina, excellent condition with various minor marks and abrasions consistent with age and use. The handles have been re gilded with there being no evidence of having had other handles. 4500.

The chest is constructed in three parts. It splits under the second drawer down and above the base apron.
