A Fine 16th Century Spanish Walnut Vargueno dating from c 1580. The rectangular chest having decorative pierced brass mounts backed in red velvet with an engraved iron hasp, lock-plate, original lock and key to the centre flanked by pendant handles and side catches. The hinged fall-down front enclosing an elaborately decorated gilded interior fitted with numerous drawers and a centre cupboard with original working lock and key, concealing further internal gilded drawers. The architectural facades with intricately carved, gilded embellishments. The stand composed of stop fluted and wrythen reeded supports on sledge feet, united by a central arcaded gallery rail of turned spindles surmounted by acorn finials, and having lopers pulling out either side to support the flap. Of fine, outstanding colour and patina, excellent condition with carious minor marks, knocks and abrasions consistent with age and use. 12,500
