A late 18th Century Oak and Walnut Northern Italian / Southern German Serpentine fronted Commode dating from c 1780. The serpentine Oak top with Walnut cross banding and Ebony, Walnut and fruitwood marquetry inlay and ogee moulded edge above three long serpentine Walnut cross banded drawers with brass handles and escutcheons flanked by canted concave corners. The sides cross banded, the whole standing on turned bun feet. Beautiful mellow colour, good condition with various minor marks consistent with age and use. A minor hair crack across one of the the top boards where it has contracted minutely over the ages. The brass escutcheons are replacements but there is no evidence of other handles being fitted so these handles may be original, they are certainly of the period. 1750
