An English late 17th
Century Walnut, floral marquetry inlaid Escritore cabinet on chest dating
from c 1690. The top with architectural moulded cornice above a pair of
short drawers with Holly stringing and floral marquetry inlaid panels
above a large Escritoire fall front profusely inlaid with various woods
and with oval central cross banded, Holly strung panel. The interior
comprised of central twin Walnut Holly strung cupboard doors surmounted by
four pigeon holes, the whole contained within sixteen small Walnut feather
banded drawers with ebonised knob handles. The fall front surface with
central hinged tooled leather sloped writing surface.
The chest base with thin long Holly strung map drawer above four short Walnut drawers with floral marquetry inlay and brass handles / escutcheons, the whole supported on elongated shaped bracket feet. The piece splits into two sections for ease of access and delivery.
Excellent mellow colour, good condition with various minor marks, chips, scratches etc consistent with age and use. One of the planks that make up the large fall front has suffered a little shrinkage over time causing a hair crack in the veneers running horizontally left to right two thirds up from the bottom ( see photo ) The fall with lock and key. £8500
